The Toe River Arts Council (TRAC) is located in the heart of Spruce Pine NC and was founded as a non-profit organization in 1976 to promote the arts in Mitchell and Yancey Counties of North Carolina. With galleries and offices in both counties, the Toe River Arts Council hosts cultural community programs, promotes tourism in Mitchell and Yancey Counties and supports local artists through galleries, grants and stipends. TRAC owns and operates galleries in Spruce Pine and Burnsville NC where art from artists exclusively from Mitchell and Yancey Counties are displayed and available for purchase.

The Blue Ridge Mountains surrounding Spruce Pine NC have historically contained a large population of premier artists and craftspeople, and Toe River Arts Council wonderfully facilitates the continuation and awareness of this tradition in the High County. Penland School, in the neighboring town of Penland NC, is a great example of the promotion and celebration of craft art and adds to the rich cultural environment surrounding Spruce Pine North Carolina. A visit to Spruce Pine NC is not complete without visiting one of the TRAC art galleries. Featuring contemporary and traditional art in various mediums, the Toe River Arts Council offers the opportunity to take home a unique, lifelong collectible from the High County Blue Ridge Mountains. The gift shops and galleries also offer gift registry services.

TRAC also hosts the Annual Music in the Mountains Folk Festival. Put on your dancin’ shoes and have a toe-tapping and hand-clapping good time. The Music in the Mountains Folk Festival is held each fall and is dedicated to the preservation of Appalachian music and culture. Tickets purchased in advance are $9 for general admission and $7 for students and seniors and can be purchased at the Burnsville TRAC Gallery or Spruce Pine TRAC Center Gallery.

If you love the excitement, bargains and variety of art offered at auctions, attend TRAC’s Annual Benefit Auction and help promote art in the High Country. Each year, the auction is themed and for 2008 the auction was called “TRAC to the Twenties” featuring donated art from local artists and craftspersons in a Roaring 20’s theme. The Annual Benefit Auction is held each August and 100% of the proceeds are donated by the artists to support TRAC’s mission. Tickets are $20 per person to enjoy this entertaining night of High Country art celebration.

The Toe River Chamber Ensemble is also hosted by TRAC and is free to the public each October. To enjoy the sounds of High Country music throughout the year, experience Java Jam, a TRAC event held every second Friday of the month from 8 pm -10 pm at the Burnsville Town Center. The cost is $12 for adults and $6 for children. Be sure to bring your dancing shoes and an appetite. Delicious desserts and coffee are available.
