Penland School is nestled in Penland North Carolina, less than 4 miles from
Spruce Pine NC. Penland School of Crafts is a nationally and internationally recognized center for education in traditional and contemporary craft. Lucy Morgan founded the Penland Weavers and Potters craft group in 1923 to teach Appalachian women various crafts such as weaving. The Penland Weavers and Potters craft group started as a cottage industry and provided local women with community, craft instruction, resources and income. Additionally, it revived handcrafted weaving. Penland Weavers and Potters group became Penland School in 1929 when Lucy Morgan brought in Penlandís first guest teacher. What began as a desire to serve women in mountain communities and preserve weaving, is now an icon of High Country heritage.
The Penland School is world-renowned for its one-of-a-kind instruction. With no standing faculty, Penland hosts teachers from colleges, universities and studio artists each year to continue its commitment to craft art education. Penlandís rustic, idyllic and secluded setting provides the perfect setting for artists to renew, revive and refine their skills. Penland School of Crafts offers spring, summer and fall classes in the medias of books & paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking, textiles and wood. One and two week classes are offered in the summer and eight week concentration classes are offered in the spring and fall. Whether you are 19 or 90, beginner or professional artist, Penland School welcomes all to their classes.
