Scenic Valle Crucis NC is the home of the legendary Mast General Store, one of the finest and oldest general stores in the state of North Carolina. The Mast General Store began in 1883 when Henry Taylor built and moved the smaller store across the street. Henry ran the store and in 1897 sold half of store to W.W. Mast, a prominent member of the community. From 1897 to 1913, the two owned and operated the general store together, and it was collectively called Taylor and Mast General Store. In 1913, Taylor sold the remaining half of his shares to W.W. Mast.
For the next sixty years it was owned and operated by the Mast Family and became known as the Mast General Store. In 1973, the store was sold to a doctor from Atlanta and a professor from Appalachian State University. The store closed for business in 1977 and remained closed until 1980 when John and Faye Cooper purchased the property and reopened the historic store for business. In 1996, the Mast Store became an employee owned company, and in 1988, the first Mast General Store opened outside of Valle Crucis in downtown
Boone NC.
 During
its heyday as a general mercantile, Mast General
Store was said to have sold everything from “cradles to caskets”. Today, visitors and residents alike flock to the Mast General Store to browse for a variety of goodies including clothing and outdoor gear, old time hearth and home gods, old fashioned toys and candy, and a variety of handmade and locally crafted gifts.
