Joara is located just outside of Morganton and was a large Native American settlement. It is historic in this area and was named for Joara Mico. Joara was a regional chiefdom of the Mississippian culture and is located in what is now Burke County NC. Joara is now known as a significant historic and archaeological site and was a place of encounter in 1540 between the party of Spanish Explorer Hernado De Soto and the Mississippian people. After the discovery by Explorer De Soto, there was an expedition under Juan Pardo in 1567 which created the first brief European settlement in the interior of the continent. In recent years, archaeological finds have established evidence of both substantial Mississippian and sustained Spanish 16th century settlement in the interior of what is now North Carolina. Joara was a significant regional chiefdom and was also the site of the Joara Mico Fort San Juan Destroyed. Fort San Juan was established by the Juan Pardo expedition as the earliest Spanish outpost (1567–1568) in the interior which is now known as North Carolina. This event took place forty years before the English settlement at Jamestown and almost twenty years before their Lost Colony of Roanoke. The Joara site is located in Morganton NC and has been excavated in portions by the Upper Catawba Valley Archaeology Project.
